Invasives to be discussed at Ramsey Area Garden Club March 14

The Ramsey Area Garden Club will hold their next meeting 7 p.m. Tue.,  March 14,

at The Lutheran Church of The Redeemer, 55 Wyckoff Ave., Ramsey.

Speaker Dr. Linda Rohleder will present an overview of the invasive plant issue and discuss some programs that have been implemented. She will review common invaders and those just starting up and focus on garden escapees.

Rohleder built the NY/NJ Trail Conference’s Invasive Strike Force volunteer program and leads the New York State Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management the lower Hudson Valley. She received her PhD in ecology from Rutgers where she studied effects of deer on forest understories. She taught Wetland Plant ID and beginning Biology Labs at Rutgers.

Jim Wright to speak at Ramsey Area Garden Club Oct. 11

The Ramsey Area Garden Club will hold their next meeting 7 p.m. Tue., Oct. 11 at The Lutheran Church of The Redeemer,55 Wyckoff Avenue, Ramsey.

The evening’s speaker will be Jim Wright. His topic, “The Nature of the Meadowlands.”

Wright is the author of the book “The Nature of the Meadowlands” as well as three other nature-related, richly illustrated books. He will discuss this New Jersey treasure and the region’s environmental renaissance. The presentation will highlight the threatened and endangered species that either breed there or use it as a rest stop during migration.

Wright is also the creator of the Meadowlands Nature Blog, writes a column for The Record, “The Bird Watcher” and is a deputy marsh warden of the Celery Farm in Allendale.

‘Native Ferns of Bergen and Passaic Counties’ to be discussed at the next Ramsey Area Garden Club meeting Sept. 13

Jean Epiphan, a staff ecologist for Rutgers University involved in plant ecology in the fringing maritime habitats of Jamaica Bay, will present a program titled “Native Ferns of Bergen and Passaic Counties” at the next meeting of the Ramsey Area Garden Club 7 p.m. Tue., Sept. 13.

Epiphan will discuss how to identify ferns, their features and requirements for soil, light and moisture, where to purchase them, which ones are rare or endangered, how to incorporate them in our landscape and where they grow naturally.

The meeting will be held at The Lutheran Church of The Redeemer, 55 Wyckoff Avenue, Ramsey.
